 The Plain Word

(Peshat level of interpretation) 

Genesis 1

בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃

1. By means of and for the sake of the firstborn Word of all words - from the lofty heavens to the firm earth - God filled all with design.

וְהָאָ֗רֶץ הָיְתָ֥ה תֹ֙הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י תְה֑וֹם וְר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֔ים מְרַחֶ֖פֶת עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַמָּֽיִם׃

2. When the earth existed in a state of destructive uselessness and yet stones to build with - 

When enclosing darkness existed upon faces of depth -

When God's presence, the breath of existence, existed fluttering expectantly as over young upon the faces of the waters -  

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים יְהִ֣י א֑וֹר וַֽיְהִי־אֽוֹר׃

3.  Then God said, "Let illumination exist! and illumination existed established."

וַיַּ֧רְא אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הָא֖וֹר כִּי־ט֑וֹב וַיַּבְדֵּ֣ל אֱלֹהִ֔ים בֵּ֥ין הָא֖וֹר וּבֵ֥ין הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

4.  And God saw this illumination which revealed his goodness - his own likeness.  So God sanctified it for its specific task thereby distinguishing it from the darkness.  He is what separates or distinguishes between what is light and what is darkness.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ לָאוֹר֙ י֔וֹם וְלַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ קָ֣רָא לָ֑יְלָה וַֽיְהִי־עֶ֥רֶב וַֽיְהִי־בֹ֖קֶר י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃ {פ}

5.  And God called to the light with the character of day and less intimately or generally he called to the darkness that it have the character of night.  Thus was established diminishing and intermingling of light with darkness until fully diminished (tohu) and daybreak all the way to high noon when the light gives full discernment (bohu.)  This established day and was able to stand alone apart from the other days.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֔ים יְהִ֥י רָקִ֖יעַ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַמָּ֑יִם וִיהִ֣י מַבְדִּ֔יל בֵּ֥ין מַ֖יִם לָמָֽיִם׃

6. And God said, "Let him exist a beaten work between the waters"  And he became the one causing division between waters and waters.  

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ אֱלֹהִים֮ אֶת־הָרָקִ֒יעַ֒ וַיַּבְדֵּ֗ל בֵּ֤ין הַמַּ֙יִם֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ מִתַּ֣חַת לָרָקִ֔יעַ וּבֵ֣ין הַמַּ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעַ֣ל לָרָקִ֑יעַ וַֽיְהִי־כֵֽן׃

7. And God produced this beaten work and he divided between the waters which were in a place of substitution or submission to the beaten work and between the waters which were in a place over the beaten work.  And he existed such. 

וַיִּקְרָ֧א אֱלֹהִ֛ים לָֽרָקִ֖יעַ שָׁמָ֑יִם וַֽיְהִי־עֶ֥רֶב וַֽיְהִי־בֹ֖קֶר י֥וֹם שֵׁנִֽי׃ {פ}

And God named the beaten work heaven.  And he existed diminishing light and light breaking through - a second day.
